- Guernica (1937)
He started using realistic techniques of painting during his early years. But after experimenting with different painting techniques, there was a significant change in his painting style. He is thus considered as one of the best artists of the 20th century.
The famous painting Guernica was created as a result of the bombing in Guernica by Italy and Germany during the Spanish civil war. The painting clearly shows the life of poor civilians during the war. Guernica is an oil painting done on canvas and is now kept in Spain.
The period between 1901 and 1904 is termed as the “Blue Period“. During this period he concentrated on monochromatic paintings using blue and blue-green colors. The “Old Guitarist” is one of the important paintings of this series. The tone of his paintings reflected his mental state during that time. When he was in a depressed state of mind, the blue color dominated in his paintings. The first painting of this series was influenced by the suicide of his friend. When there was a shift from depression, he started using vibrant and rich colors, which marked the beginning of “Rose period”.
He died on 8th April 1973 during a dinner party with his wife and friends. Final words of Picasso were “Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can’t drink any more“.
